Q:

How can I teach Technology Engineering with a degree in Engineering?

A:

Applying for an Alternative C, or E, License

The Alternative Type C licensure program requires very close coordination between the Department of Education, Career and Technical Education Division, Program Consultant for Technology Engineering Education and the employing Tennessee school district. An Alternative Type C Teacher License may be issued to an individual who holds a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university

Once employed and prior to teaching in a Technology Engineering laboratory the candidates must:

  • Be accepted into an approved Alternative C Licensure program at one of the participating Tennessee higher education institutions.

  • Complete the 5-day 45 hours intensive summer training for Technology Engineering prior to becoming employed on an Alternative C License. This can be done either in state or out of state (at the teacher and systems expense)

Since there are no approved undergraduate programs of study in Technology Engineering Education in Tennessee the State Board of Education approved the following guidelines on May 2, 2003 as an employment standard.

If an instructor was hired after the completion of the summer training institute, they hiring LEA must meet the following criteria:

  • The System will complete the Interim Guidelines Forms for Waiver and submit them to the Program Consultant for Technology Engineering prior the 10th  day of employment of the candidate.  (The completion of all documentation is the responsibility of the candidate and the system.)

  • The Division of Career and Technical Education will place the candidate on the State Training Table for Employment Standards once all documentation has been submitted to the Program Consultant for Technology Engineering by the deadline of November 1st.

  • Systems who do not comply with the guidelines for the Alternative Licensure standards will be fined $25,000 for each infraction and the candidate’s employment standard will be revoked.

Guidelines for candidates seeking alternative licensure and endorsement:

Candidates who hold a bachelor's degree but who are not licensed teachers may use alternative A, C and E licenses.  The Division of Career and Technical Education, working with teacher preparation programs, will verify subject area competence of individual candidates seeking licensure by all candidates.

All candidates must:

  • Successfully complete the Praxis specialty in Technology Education with a minimum score of 580.

  • Successfully pass the Principles of Learning & Teaching (PLT) grades 7-12 30524; passing score is 159.

Be assigned a mentor by the State Program Consultant for Technology Engineering Education.  The candidate will do the following:

  • Visit an assigned mentor’s Technology Engineering lab, on two separate visits, for a total of 16 hours of visitation within the first 30-days of the school year the candidate begins employment.

  • The mentor will complete the appropriate forms and submit them to the Program Consultant for Technology Engineering Education for final approval within the time allowed.

  • Visit a Technology Engineering instructor’s lab, outside the system they are employed, for a total of 16 hours of visitation.  The candidate will visit a highly qualified instructor who has been

  • approved on the “Best Practice Program List” for Technology Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or Engineering.  These visits must be completed by the end of the first semester of the school year the candidate begins employment.  The candidate will be responsible for informing their mentor of these visits and sites and will need to have all appropriate forms completed and returned to their mentor.  The mentor shall provide support to the candidate during the first year of teaching and participate with the candidate in a university seminar at the end of the year.

  • Attend the New Teacher Training Seminar sponsored by the Division of Career and Technical Education.  The Program Consultant for Technology Engineering Education is responsible for

  • communicating the location and dates for this training.

  • Successfully complete the OSHA/TOSHA Safety Training sponsored by the Division of Career and Technical Education during the first semester of employment.  The Program Consultant for Technology Engineering Education is responsible for communicating the location and dates for this training.

The Alternative C License is available in all endorsement areas for which the institutions offer approved programs.  Feel free to call Dr. Thomas D’Apolito, Program Consultant for Technology Engineering (615) 532-2844 or email him at: tom.dapolito@state.tn.us and request that the Alternative Type C License application form be mailed to you.
