Our Mission

The mission of Technology Engineering Education is to ensure all students are technologically literate.

Our Vision

To provide leadership, service and connections to help prepare all Tennessee teachers and students towards becoming technologically literate citizens.

Technological Literacy Defined
Technological literacy will enable students to become life long learners who are effective and contributing members of society. The development of technological literacy focuses on knowledge, understandings and appreciations pertaining to technology, its evolution and societal significance, and the interrelationship of people, capital, knowledge, time, tools, materials, and machines in technology processes and systems.

Technology Engineering Education Defined
Technology Engineering Education is an integrated, experience-based instructional program designed to prepare students to be knowledgeable about technology - its evolution, systems, technologies, utilization, and social and cultural significance. It results in the application of mathematics and science concepts to technological systems in areas such as, but not limited to: construction, manufacturing, communications, transportation, biotechnology, and power and energy.

Definition of Technology

Technology is the application of resources to design, produce, and use products and services that extend human potential to improve and control the natural and human made environment.

Goals

  • Provide a standards-based 5-12 program that ensures that all students are technologically literate.

  • Provide opportunities for all students without regard to gender or ethnic origin.

  • Provide clear standards and expectations for increasing student achievement in math, science, and technology.

  • Provide leadership and support that will produce continuous improvement and innovation in the program.

  • Restore America's status as the leader in innovation.

  • Provide a program that constructs learning from a very early age and culminates in a capstone experience that leads students to become the next generation of technologists, innovators, designers, and engineers.

Organizing Principles

The program is organized around seven principles. These principles are very large concepts that identify major content organizers for the program. In order of importance, the seven organizing principles are:

  • Engineering through design improves life.

  • Technology has and continues to affect everyday life.

  • Technology drives invention and innovation and is a thinking and doing process.

  • Technologies are combined to make technological systems.

  • Technology creates issues that change the way people live and interact.

  • Technology impacts society and must be assessed to determine if it is good or bad.

  • Technology is the basis for improving on the past and creating the future.

Benefits of Technology

  • Develop higher thinking skills.

  • Learn new and emerging technology.

  • Apply technology to practical problems.

  • Help career choice and planning.

  • Build work and safety attitudes.

  • Enhance leadership ability.

  • Reinforce other subjects.

  • Engage in problem-solving.

  • Prepare for advanced education and training.

Technological Studies Involve

  • Designing, developing, and utilizing technological systems.

  • Open-ended problem-based design activities.

  • Open-ended project-based learning activities.

  • Cognitive, manipulative and effective learning strategies.

  • Working individually as well as in a team to discover solutions to problems.
